What is a Visibility Score?

The Visibility Score is a single number out of 100 that measures how visible a business really is to the people it needs to reach, scored by the Visible OS algorithm across the three lenses of Clarity, Authority and Leverage.

The Visibility Score is a single number, out of 100, that measures how visible a business really is to the people it needs to reach, and how ready it is to convert that visibility into growth. It is the headline metric of the Visible OS framework.

One number, because businesses run on scoreboards. Revenue tells you what already happened. The Visibility Score tells you what's about to.

What does the Visibility Score measure?

Three things, weighed together, the Three Lenses:

  • Clarity, does the market instantly understand who you are, who you serve, and why it matters? Confused prospects don't convert; they leave.
  • Authority, does anything beyond your own website vouch for you? Rankings, reviews, citations, referrals, being the answer AI engines give when someone asks.
  • Leverage, does your growth run on systems, or on the founder's personal effort? Effort caps out. Systems compound.

A business can score high on one lens and still stall, because the lowest scoring lens is usually the constraint. A brilliant offer nobody can find is a Clarity business with an Authority problem. A well-known firm that depends entirely on the founder's networking is an Authority business with a Leverage problem.

What is a good Visibility Score?

Scores map to the Four Stages: Invisible, Emerging, Visible, and Visible Authority. There is no universal "good". A score is good when it's higher than last quarter and the lowest lens is rising. The score's job isn't to flatter. It's to point at the constraint, to give a sense of orientation and direction, at all times.

How is a Visibility Score measured?

Through the free Visible Test, a structured assessment combining your own answers about how the business runs with an external read of your actual market footprint. The result is scored by the Visible OS algorithm: a weighted model of the three lenses, built from thirteen-plus years of diagnosing founder-led businesses, that resolves your answers into a score, a stage and an archetype. It takes minutes, and most founders find the lens breakdown more confronting, and more useful, than the headline score.

Is this the same as an SEO visibility score?

No. An SEO visibility score, the kind rank-tracking tools report, measures one channel: what share of search results your website captures for a set of tracked keywords. The Visibility Score is a business visibility score. It measures the whole business through the three lenses, Clarity, Authority and Leverage. Search visibility is one input to the Authority lens, not the answer. A business can hold a strong SEO score and still be invisible where it matters: unclear to prospects, unvouched-for beyond its own website, and entirely dependent on the founder.

How is this different from web traffic or followers?

Traffic and followers measure attention. The Visibility Score measures position: whether the right people can find you, believe you, and buy from you without the founder personally driving every step. Plenty of businesses with modest traffic hold strong Visibility Scores. Plenty of large audiences sit on top of invisible businesses.

Where did the Visibility Score come from?

It was developed by Matt J Hanham as part of Visible OS, distilled from thirteen-plus years of diagnosing founder-led businesses at Visible. The pattern behind it: businesses rarely fail from lack of effort. They fail from effort pointed at the wrong lens.
